Rebate 2010: birthday present

Cindy Grymko took the rebate

Last year, Cindy Grymko was thinking about her upcoming 50th birthday, and thought a new car would be a great gift.

So she got one. A beefed-up Chrysler 300C, complete with a Hemi motor and “all the horns and whistles,” she says.

“This is an upgrade model,” Cindy says. “I thought, ‘What do I need a Hemi for?’”

Cindy financed her car with Chrysler, but before she made her first payment an American 1 employee at our former Argyle Branch told her about the 50% loan rebate in April. She hadn’t had the car a month yet, but figured, “why not?”

“I told them, ‘Sure, sounds good. What do I have to do?’” Cindy says.

Initially, she had no idea how much she would get back for her interest rebate. She figured maybe $400 or $500, tops, for the interest she was paying on her souped-up Chrysler.

But when the rebate deposit hit her account, she saw the rebate gave her more than double what she thought.

“I was like, ‘Wow, that’s cool,’” Cindy says. “It’s helped me stay afloat, with the economy and helping the kids.”

Cindy was off work due to knee surgery, and was afraid she might be late on a payment – which would mean she would forfeit the rebate. But she found a way, and ended up being one of the top five rebate recipients last year.

“I would tell anyone to do it,” she says. “It’s like a tax refund, but it helps build your credit.”

Argyle Branch closing Dec. 19

Argyle Branch closing

Our Argyle Branch is closing at the end of the business day on Saturday, Dec. 19.

That Saturday, our Argyle lobby will be closed. The drive-through will be open during normal branch hours.

After December 19, head one block south to our new, bigger North St. Branch at 930 West North St. The new branch will have 4,500-sq. feet of supreme member services, including six drive-through lanes and two ATMs, plus a ton of more lobby and parking space.

Stay tuned for details on our North St. Branch grand opening event. In the meantime, check out the latest pictures from the North St. construction site.

Felpausch Branch closing Thursday

goodbyefelpausch

American 1 Federal Credit Union will be closing our Felpausch Branch doors forever on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the end of business hours.

Over the years, the Felpausch location has served us well, and we hate to see it go.

Our new North St. Branch, however, is on schedule to open its doors in December 2009, and will replace both the Felpausch Branch and the Argyle Branch. This new branch will provide more lobby space, more parking, and more drive thru lanes.

In the meantime, please use our Home Office at 718 E. Michigan Ave in downtown Jackson – a short 2 mile drive East from Felpausch. The Home Office is also open until 7 p.m. Monday-Friday and until 3 p.m. on Saturdays. There are several nearby ATMs, including Super Liquor at 1200 West Michigan Ave. and Kelly’s Quick Stop at 3797 West Michigan Ave.

Look for more details on our North St. Branch grand opening in the weeks to come.

Introducing: Receipts on demand

Receipts On Demand

Like many other businesses, American 1 is always looking to cut costs for our members, reduce waste, and leave less of an impact on the environment.

That’s why we’re excited to announce Receipts On Demand, a program that introduces both a new receipt and a new way of doing things.

For one, we’re no longer automatically printing receipts for our members for each transaction. If you come into a branch to manage your account, and you want a paper receipt, you will ask for one. Otherwise, we won’t print a receipt. Ask yourself: do you really need a printed receipt for your transaction? Sometimes you will, sometimes you won’t. We’ll assume, in most cases, that you won’t need a receipt.

Second, we’re launching new thermal receipts and printers at three of our branches – Home Office, Argyle, and Parnall – starting Monday. Those receipts you get when you pay for gas at the pump? They’re kind of like those. They’re smaller, lighter, and only one sheet – instead of the yellow-and-white sheets we used to have.

This new on-demand receipt system does many things, all of them good, including:

  • Save money on paper costs and waste
  • Reduce our environmental impact with smaller receipts AND less of them
  • Make most transactions faster, saving time
  • Reducing identity theft, since there’s less of a paper trail

While this on-demand receipt system is kicking off at three of our branches, we plan to install it credit-union-wide over the next few months.

So when you make a transaction at an American 1 branch, and we ask if you want a receipt, make sure you really think about it. For some members, a printed receipt helps them manage their money better.

But if it’s just going to end up in the trash, say “no thanks.”

Argyle vs. North St. – size comparison

northstgooglemaps

So just how big is our North St. Branch property?

Using Google Maps, you can see exactly how big it is in comparison with our Argyle Branch property – the red-circled spot on the map above.

At the bottom, you can see our North St. property, which – as of this snapshot – is still a big green, grassy field. The white box overlaying the field is the entire property on Argyle St.

North St. is going to be big.

Felpausch Branch to remain open.

Good news: We’re keeping our Felpausch Branch open as long as possible. Feel free to drop in from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday until further notice.

The branch-side entrance will remain open, so feel free to do your banking as usual until we shut the lights off.

Extended hours at Argyle starting May 12

Argyle's hours will be extended May 12

We’re very sad to see Felpausch closing. So, to make sure your service doesn’t get interrupted, we’re extending the hours at our Argyle Branch – only 1.8 miles away from Felpausch – starting on Monday, May 12.

Argyle’s lobby hours will be Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The drive-thru will be open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It’s sure not a replacement for the convenience of Felpausch, but this will help those members coming from out of town.

Let us know if you have any questions, and sorry again for any inconvenience.

Members have options at Felpausch Branch.

Our Felpausch Branch will remain open until the store closes.

Just when we spread the good word about Felpausch’s community involvement, the news hit that the store is closing May 24.

What is an American 1 member to do?

Luckily, we have options. Argyle is only 1.8 miles away. The Home Office is a pretty quick trip down Michigan Ave. And there’s always ATMs, online banking, and A1 Access phone banking.

Just know that:

  • our Felpausch Branch will be open as long as the store is open
  • no employees are losing their jobs
  • our Board of Directors is evaluating possible branch locations as I type this

We think the whole thing is very unfortunate, but we sure didn’t choose the timing or the conditions.

One of the benefits of having many other branch locations is that no matter where you usually do your banking, the folks at the other locations will welcome you with open arms.
