Supermarket Sweep hits Chelsea’s Country Market

Chelsea\'s Supermarket Sweep at Country MarketAs if we didn’t learn our lesson before, we’re hosting another Supermarket Sweep – this time at Chelsea’s Country Market.

Get ready for fast-car flying action on Wednesday, May 28 starting at 11 a.m. Our American 1 team is assembled; now we’re getting other teams from businesses in the area to compete.

What’s at stake? Faith In Action’s food bank. All the food collected and donated by Country Market will benefit the assistance organization. Faith In Action is “a community funded, faith based assistance and resource center for those who need a helping hand” that serves the Chelsea and Dexter areas.

We’re doing our part, too, by holding a canned-food drive at our Chelsea Branch. Drop off your non-perishables at our branch or at Country Market starting Monday, May 19.

Otherwise, stop by the Supermarket Sweep when it happens May 28. If it’s anything like the Felpausch version, it’ll be quite the show. Teams of three will hold onto shopping carts as they run through the grocery store, grabbing as many specific food items as they can in five minutes. Then all the food collected is donated to Faith In Action.

The event will also serve as a Grand Opening for our Chelsea Branch.

If your business is interested in forming a team, contact Liz or Marla at 888-213-2848.

Dead last at Supermarket Sweep, and loving it.

Wobbly Wheel winners Wendy, Katie, and me.

Eleven teams raced through Felpausch Food Centers on Tuesday for our annual Media Supermarket Sweep. All the food teams collect is given to the Food Bank of Southcentral Michigan, who then turns it over to our local Salvation Army food bank.

Last year our American 1 team did pretty well. This year? Dead last. We earned the Wobbly Wheel award after grabbing only 46 of the 60 or so food items scattered throughout the store.

Oh well. We did it for a good cause, and all of our branches collected two shopping carts full of food besides what we collected during the sweep.

The Salesman team won again, with WLNS Channel 6 taking second at the Jackson Citizen Patriot team taking third.

“We’d like to thank the Jackson Felpausch for graciously opening up their store for the Sweep, and Spartan Stores and American 1 for their support as well,” said Dan Salerno, the Food Bank of South Central Michigan’s director of development. “Ultimately it’s needy households in Jackson that are the winners, receiving a real boost from the food picked up today.”

That’s right. Next year, we’ll try to make sure we “boost” our total for the Food Bank.
