$1000 holiday cash winner

Congratulations to Wendy Shaw of Jackson – she was our $1,000 holiday cash winner from our Winter Vehicle Sale.

Wendy financed a Ford Freestyle at the sale. “We like the van even better now,” her husband Fred said.

And indeed, Wendy couldn’t believe she was the winner when we called. But now that she has that extra $1,000, she’s using it all to go Christmas shopping for her five grandkids.

Congratulations Wendy!

News from the August car sale

August Sale - Sunny lot

Check out pictures from our August car sale at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. For once, the weather cooperated and we had a nice weekend.

August Sale - Karen Baker

Also, congratulations to Karen Baker of Jackson – our $1,000 shopping spree winner from the sale. Karen purchased a Chevy Impala at the sale (“It rides like a dream,” she says), and opted for $500 in Walmart gift cards, $250 in Jackson Crossing gift cards, and $250 to the Westwood Mall.

May and June vehicle sale winners

Danielle is our May winner

Congratulations to Danielle Lenz – our May 2010 vehicle sale grand prize winner. Danielle won $1,000 in gas cards at our Jackson Co. Fairgrounds sale.

Unfortunately her 2008 Chevy Cobalt was totalled soon after she financed it at the sale. But between insurance and American 1’s GAP protection, she recouped the costs. Now she’s shopping for another vehicle.

Nick Howard

Nick Howard purchased a Pontiac G6 at our most recent June sale. Nick won our summer fun package that included Detroit Tigers box seats, Cedar Point tickets, a $100 gas card, restaurant gift cards, and free rounds of golf – and more.

“Spend a little, get a little,” Nick says. “I was pretty excited.”

Congratulations to both of our car sale winners!

Busy weekend in Jackson

Rose Parade - Follow me

Summer is, typically, a busy season for American 1. We host a bunch of summer community events – and 2010 is no different.

But this weekend is especially busy: we have both our Summer Sales Event on Friday and Saturday and the Rose Parade on Sunday.

Now that’s a crazy weekend.

At the sale, we invited dependable local dealerships to bring 200 of their best used vehicles on Friday, June 4 and Saturday, June 5 at the Sears parking lot in Jackson. Just in time to kick off your summer fun season.

The Rose Festival activities start on Saturday, but we’re proud of the Rose Parade on Sunday, June 6 starting at 1 p.m. in downtown Jackson. The parade winds its way down Greenwood Ave. and Fourth St. to Ella Sharp Park, where we kick off summer with the Party in the Park. The whole weekend is a celebration of Jackson, and a neat way to see local businesses and organizations show their creative side with all the floats.

If you’re in town this weekend, join us at both events!

$1,000 holiday cash winner

Congratulations to Barbara Miks of Jackson. Barb is our $1,000 holiday cash winner from December’s Winter Weather Vehicle Sale.

Barb financed a Chevy Impala at the sale, becoming a new member when she closed on her loan.

The $1,000 cash prize comes just in time, too. Barb’s son, Travis, is graduating from the Marines boot camp at the end of January. Faced with a large travel bill to San Diego, California to see him graduate, Barb was afraid she wouldn’t be able to make the trip.

“Now I get to go,” she says. “It was meant to be.”

Barb was worried she would have to tell her son she couldn’t make it out to see him graduate. The idea of missing out on her son becoming a Marine terrified her. With her $1,000 prize, however, Barb can’t wait to see the son she hasn’t seen since October.

“I’m so excited,” she says.

Congratulations, Barb – and have a great trip!

It was a dark and stormy car sale

Spring Car Sale - Dave secures the tent

Last weekend’s spring vehicle sale, held April 24 and 25 at Sears in Jackson, was super-successful. We kept $1 million in the community, and almost 100 members were able to finance quality vehicles from six local dealerships.

But then Saturday, the storms hit.

Dave Lewis (above), our ATM specialist, worked with several other employees to secure our tents before the flash thunderstorms hit.

Spring Car Sale - after the storm

We evacuated the tents twice, with employees and shoppers heading into Sears to stay dry (above).

All the action was captured in photos, and you can see them at our Flickr photo gallery.

Thanks to the entire community for supporting the sale. Everyone who financed a vehicle that weekend took advantage of our big loan rebate – plus a trip to our famous cash machine.

See you at our next sale in September!

Two members win prizes in September

When Bob Soltis’s 1988 Buick Park Avenue finally kicked the bucket, he figured the fall used vehicle sale would be a good time to get one.

“I had to put the Buick to sleep,” Soltis says. “I needed a car, so I went down to the sale.”

He found a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis he liked, and financed it through American 1’s new Simple Loan program. For that, Soltis is one of our two $500 gas card winners from the fall sale.

Soltis and his wife, Betty, have been American 1 members for decades. Soltis uses our direct deposit services for his railroad pension.

He doesn’t know how long his $500 worth of gas cards will last, but he says his six kids will see a lot of the benefit from his prize.

Congratulations, Bob!

We also had Betsy Branham win $100 worth of Sears gift cards at our recent College Mixer with K105.3. Congratulations to Betsy!

Stay tuned for more prize-winning members, coming soon.

Fall sale starts tomorrow.

Tomorrow our Fall Used Vehicle Sale kicks off at Sears. These sales are big events for us, and no one does a car sale like American 1.

To prepare, we’ve kicked off our Simple Loan plan. Plus we’re having two chances to win a $500 gas card, for up to $1,000 in gas. Who can’t use that these days?

A few things to keep in mind if you’re heading to the sale:

  • Get pre-approved – it saves a bunch of time when you’re ready to finance
  • Test drive it – just to make sure you like it
  • Trade-ins are welcome – so bring what you have
  • Even if you’re not “in the market,” stop by the sale – we’ve got tons of food and prize giveaways
  • Warm up your hands – you’ll need them for our famous Cash Vault (we bought a new one!)
  • Bring the whole family – we’ll keep the kids entertained
  • Complete your Simple Loan plan – and watch how easy the sale goes when you get there

We’ll see you Friday and Saturday at the sale!

Introducing a better way: Simple Loan

American 1 is changing the way we do lending.

Imagine picking out a vehicle on a dealership lot anywhere in the country, giving us a call, and driving away in your vehicle – all without stepping foot into an American 1 branch. That’s the idea behind Simple Loan, an exciting new plan to simplify the loan process.

Simple Loan lets you sign one set of loan documents up front, establishing your preferences (we call it “the plan”), and – from then on – closing on a loan without having to work around our branch hours. All the hard work – the papers, the transfers, the payment – is done behind the scenes by us. In fact, once you’ve established your plan, your biggest responsibility will be picking out the vehicle you like.

Simple Loan works like this: you come into a branch and sign some papers. These papers tell us what your lending preferences are, updates your personal information, and lays the groundwork for any loans in the future. Then, when you want to finance a used vehicle or want an American 1 Visa card, you simply give us a call. We verify your plan, check to make sure the application information is correct, work to get it approved, and arrange payment with the dealership (for a vehicle) or send your new Visa card in the mail. Those documents you signed at the beginning make all this convenience possible.

Right now, American 1 is the only credit union in the area that does Simple Loan, or anything like it. But it’s not a new idea. In fact, we’ve taken the best practices of other credit unions – ideas that have worked before – and developed Simple Loan to fit your needs.

The up-front paperwork process, from start to finish, might take a half hour. But from then on, we take care of all the lending details. You tell us what kind of loan you need, and we do all the paperwork behind the scenes.

There are a few exceptions. If you’re buying a vehicle from a private individual, and not a dealer, there is some title work to be done. Refinances are also an example of when you may need to sign some papers. But even in situations where we need your signature, we can get it over the fax machine.

This is an easier way to get a loan. And it works for vehicle loans, signature loans, and Visa cards. Instead of doing a bunch of different paperwork for all those kinds of loans, though, you’ll sign one set of documents. That’s all there is to it.

For the upcoming Fall Used Vehicle Sale, we want as many members signed up for Simple Loan as possible. For one, it will make our car sales much more efficient. The up-front paperwork takes less time than sitting down and financing a vehicle used to take. Second, we’ll have a special station set up at the sale just for Simple Loan members – meaning you’ll be in and out and driving away in minutes.

To help kick off the plan, our branches are staying open later so you can establish your plan. Stop in on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday until 7 p.m. at any American 1 location to get started. That way, you can stop in after work if you’re pressed for time.

And please call us (888.213.2848) with any questions you have. We’re really excited about Simple Loan and how much easier it’s going to make closing a loan for our members.

Thanks+

The A1 sale crew

After our recent car sale and the advertising we put around it, you’ve probably noticed we’ve been tooting our own horn a bit. Modesty and humbleness have their place, and more businesses should try practicing it, but our point is to let you know – in spite of everything going on in our area – your credit union is doing just fine.

You may have seen the numbers in the ad: 8,000 new members last year, 1,800 new members so far this year, 9,000 people attending our free community events, $1.6 million dollars saved in ATM fees. These are big numbers.

Plus $1 million in auto loans at our spring sale, which means $1 million that will help local businesses (like the dealerships) and that, as Bruce over at The Car Company said, will be “reinvested in the local economy.”

The Car Company is a good example, because they sold almost 30 vehicles on Friday and Saturday. Ask any other dealer in town whether they can pull off those numbers over a weekend.

Historically, credit unions have helped out their communities when the community needs them the most. This is that time, and that’s exactly what we’re trying to do.

So thanks. Thanks for being a member, thanks for making our sales such a big hit, and thanks for helping us help out Jackson and Hillsdale and Battle Creek and Chelsea and all the other communities we call home.
