Chelsea’s Supermarket Sweep

Supermarket Sweep

Our Supermarket Sweep, a celebration of our Chelsea Branch’s grand opening in 2008, hit the Country Market store last Tuesday. Ten teams raced to grab almost $1,200 in food items for Faith in Action’s food pantry.

Congratulations to Chelsea’s Manpower, who took first place honors. Check out photos from the event at our Flickr photo gallery.

And check out the video from 2009’s Chelsea Supermarket Sweep.

For your entertainment, here’s a short video on this year’s Supermarket Sweep at Chelsea’s Country Market.

We kicked the event off last year to celebrate the grand opening of our Chelsea Branch. We invite local businesses to race through the supermarket, collecting specially-marked items, and donating everything to Faith In Action.

This year, the teams collected 369 items worth $1,000 – and had a bunch of fun doing it.

And hey, our American 1 team (Janelle, Kari, and Lynn) didn’t get last place. Always a bonus.

See you next year!

Chelsea Supermarket Sweep collects $1,000 in food items for Faith in Action

Chelsea Supermarket Sweep - packing up

Eight teams participated in our Chelsea Supermarket Sweep at Country Market this past Wednesday. The race collected 369 food items for Faith in Action’s food pantry worth more than $1,000.

Much like our other Supermarket Sweeps, the rules of the Chelsea race are simple: teams race around the store with a grocery cart, grabbing one of each of the 60 available items. Whoever collects the most items wins, and all the collected items go directly to charity.

Several teams showed up early Wednesday to scope out Chelsea’s Country Market.

“I shop here all the time,” Babette from the Chelsea Senior Center said. “I should know where everything’s at.”

The Senior Center’s team had a strategy involving color-coding their list of items and keeping an eye out for the tell-tale yellow signs that marked qualifying items. Perhaps it’s ironic that, for all the planning by the Senior Center, the team earned the “Wobbly Wheel” award – meaning they collected the fewest items.

“We still feel good about it,” Babette said. “It’s all for the cause.”

The Chelsea Milling Company earned first-place honors by collection 58 items worth $150. Reinhart Realtors took second, and Jackson’s own K105.3 FM team placed third.

Thanks to all the team who participated!

Chelsea Branch\'s grand opening

We celebrated two big events on Wednesday: both our Chelsea Branch’s grand opening, and the first Chelsea Supermarket Sweep at Country Market.

Above, our president/CEO Dave Puckett (far left) and Sharon Hayes, Chelsea’s branch manager, clip the ribbon thanks to the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce.

Here are a few more photos from the day.

Supermarket Sweep hits Chelsea’s Country Market

Chelsea\'s Supermarket Sweep at Country MarketAs if we didn’t learn our lesson before, we’re hosting another Supermarket Sweep – this time at Chelsea’s Country Market.

Get ready for fast-car flying action on Wednesday, May 28 starting at 11 a.m. Our American 1 team is assembled; now we’re getting other teams from businesses in the area to compete.

What’s at stake? Faith In Action’s food bank. All the food collected and donated by Country Market will benefit the assistance organization. Faith In Action is “a community funded, faith based assistance and resource center for those who need a helping hand” that serves the Chelsea and Dexter areas.

We’re doing our part, too, by holding a canned-food drive at our Chelsea Branch. Drop off your non-perishables at our branch or at Country Market starting Monday, May 19.

Otherwise, stop by the Supermarket Sweep when it happens May 28. If it’s anything like the Felpausch version, it’ll be quite the show. Teams of three will hold onto shopping carts as they run through the grocery store, grabbing as many specific food items as they can in five minutes. Then all the food collected is donated to Faith In Action.

The event will also serve as a Grand Opening for our Chelsea Branch.
