So long, Felpausch

Yesterday was the final day of business at our Felpausch Branch.

The Felpausch grocery store, however, has been closed for some time now. So before we packed up and left, I grabbed a few pictures (above) of the empty store.

Pretty sad. Now that giant building will stand vacant until someone comes up with a better idea for it.

So long, Felpausch. It’s been a good run.

Felpausch Branch closing Thursday

American 1 Federal Credit Union will be closing our Felpausch Branch doors forever on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the end of business hours.

Over the years, the Felpausch location has served us well, and we hate to see it go.

Our new North St. Branch, however, is on schedule to open its doors in December 2009, and will replace both the Felpausch Branch and the Argyle Branch. This new branch will provide more lobby space, more parking, and more drive thru lanes.

In the meantime, please use our Home Office at 718 E. Michigan Ave in downtown Jackson – a short 2 mile drive East from Felpausch. The Home Office is also open until 7 p.m. Monday-Friday and until 3 p.m. on Saturdays. There are several nearby ATMs, including Super Liquor at 1200 West Michigan Ave. and Kelly’s Quick Stop at 3797 West Michigan Ave.

Look for more details on our North St. Branch grand opening in the weeks to come.

Felpausch Branch to remain open.

Good news: We’re keeping our Felpausch Branch open as long as possible. Feel free to drop in from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday until further notice.

The branch-side entrance will remain open, so feel free to do your banking as usual until we shut the lights off.

Extended hours at Argyle starting May 12

Argyle's hours will be extended May 12

We’re very sad to see Felpausch closing. So, to make sure your service doesn’t get interrupted, we’re extending the hours at our Argyle Branch – only 1.8 miles away from Felpausch – starting on Monday, May 12.

Argyle’s lobby hours will be Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The drive-thru will be open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It’s sure not a replacement for the convenience of Felpausch, but this will help those members coming from out of town.

Let us know if you have any questions, and sorry again for any inconvenience.

Members have options at Felpausch Branch.

Our Felpausch Branch will remain open until the store closes.

Just when we spread the good word about Felpausch’s community involvement, the news hit that the store is closing May 24.

What is an American 1 member to do?

Luckily, we have options. Argyle is only 1.8 miles away. The Home Office is a pretty quick trip down Michigan Ave. And there’s always ATMs, online banking, and A1 Access phone banking.

Just know that:

  • our Felpausch Branch will be open as long as the store is open
  • no employees are losing their jobs
  • our Board of Directors is evaluating possible branch locations as I type this

We think the whole thing is very unfortunate, but we sure didn’t choose the timing or the conditions.

One of the benefits of having many other branch locations is that no matter where you usually do your banking, the folks at the other locations will welcome you with open arms.

Dead last at Supermarket Sweep, and loving it.

Wobbly Wheel winners Wendy, Katie, and me.

Eleven teams raced through Felpausch Food Centers on Tuesday for our annual Media Supermarket Sweep. All the food teams collect is given to the Food Bank of Southcentral Michigan, who then turns it over to our local Salvation Army food bank.

Last year our American 1 team did pretty well. This year? Dead last. We earned the Wobbly Wheel award after grabbing only 46 of the 60 or so food items scattered throughout the store.

Oh well. We did it for a good cause, and all of our branches collected two shopping carts full of food besides what we collected during the sweep.

The Salesman team won again, with WLNS Channel 6 taking second at the Jackson Citizen Patriot team taking third.

“We’d like to thank the Jackson Felpausch for graciously opening up their store for the Sweep, and Spartan Stores and American 1 for their support as well,” said Dan Salerno, the Food Bank of South Central Michigan’s director of development. “Ultimately it’s needy households in Jackson that are the winners, receiving a real boost from the food picked up today.”

That’s right. Next year, we’ll try to make sure we “boost” our total for the Food Bank.

Supermarket Sweep benefits Food Bank.

American 1 rings up their food at Felpausch.

Felpausch Food Stores and American 1 Federal Credit Union teamed up for the Jackson Media Supermarket Sweep, benefitting the Food Bank of Southcentral Michigan.

Six teams raced around Felpausch collecting tagged food items that were donated to the Food Bank. Each team was given a list of groceries and had five minutes to collect as many as they could.

The Salesman team won again this year, with American 1’s team placing second and K105.3’s team coming in third. Lansing’s Q106, a new team this year, earned the “Wobbly Wheel” award by grabbing the fewest items.

“In these tough economic times, every little bit helps,” Teresa Osborne, operation director for the Food Bank, said.

Felpausch is accepting donations through April for the Food Bank. Customers can drop off food items purchased at the store in marked bins.
