Paws & Claws Expo 2011 photos

Paws & Claws Expo - Dolled up

It’s ruff (ha!) being a pet fashion show model: all that attention and scratches behind the ear.

But our doggie models strutted their stuff down the cat (dog?) walk during Saturday’s fashion show at the Paws & Claws Expo. Check out all the pictures from the event at our Flickr gallery.

And thanks to everyone who came out to support these great pets and the Cascades Humane Society.

Staff Snowpocalypse sledding trip

Snowpocalypse Sledding - Vanessa and Katherine

Who was crazy enough to go sledding down Cascades Hill during the blizzard of 2011?

A small group of American 1 employees, that’s who.

And unlike a lot of places in town, our branches are still open to serve our members on Wednesday, Feb. 2.

Jackson and Grass Lake Christmas parade pictures

Jackson Christmas Parade - All set to go

American 1 particpated in the Jackson, Brooklyn, and Grass Lake Christmas parade this year, and we have a bunch of pictures to share. Check out pictures of the Jackson and Grass Lake parades at our Flickr gallery.

Our friends over at took some great shots of the downtown Jackson parade, too.

Incorrect address fee (and why)

As of July 1, 2010, we started charging a $5.00 monthly fee to any account that has an American 1 Federal Credit Union mailing returned to the credit union because of an incorrect address.

An account is flagged when a mailing is returned and members have 30 days to update the address before the fee will be imposed. Once the member submits a proper change of address, the account will no longer be charged the incorrect address fee. If the monthly incorrect address fee charged takes the account to a zero balance, the account will be closed.

We receive way too much mail that gets returned to the credit union because of incorrect information. Because of out-of-date addresses, too much postage and paper are wasted.

On your next branch visit, make sure we have your up-to-date address, phone number, and e-mail address on file. Or contact us and make sure your information is up to date. As always, the best option is signing up for e-statements – that way, your monthly statements and notices are e-mailed to you, helping us to reduce waste.

Shred Day shredder winner

claire foley picture

Congratulations to Claire Foley, our Shred Day shredder winner.

Claire stopped by our free community Shred Day to take care of some documents she had been saving. And what good timing: her home shredder just broke.

“I’ll use this shredder every day,” she said. “I want to keep it up just to reduce the clutter.”

We had about 80 people stop by the shredding event, but those people had a ton of material to shred.

Look here for any updates on future shred events!

Branches opening late for fall quarterly

American 1 branches will open later on Wednesday, Oct. 13 for our quarterly staff meeting.

Jackson-area branches will open at 10 a.m., while those branches outside of Jackson will open at 11 a.m.

We do these quarterly meetings for staff training, education, and team-building once a quarter, usually in October, January, April, and July – and usually in the middle of the month.

Sorry for any inconvenience!

Community support: a sense of duty

Brad Flory at the Jackson Citizen Patriot:

Founded in 1950 as the Jackson Co-Op Federal Credit Union, American 1 directly organizes and finances 11 community events each year in Jackson — including the Women’s Expo, the Kids’ Fest and the Teen Idol competition — with all proceeds going to local charities.

The company also gives financial support to many other community events and charities. It is largely responsible for reviving Jackson’s annual Rose Parade, and it gave the Jackson County Fair a much-needed financial boost by purchasing naming rights to the American 1 Fair Events Center.

We’re glad that Flory pointed out the other financial institutions around town that are doing their part to make Jackson a better place, too.

With so much bad news lately, it’s nice to hear about some home-grown businesses that are giving back, doing fun things, and doing it all out of what Flory calls a “sense of duty.”

Credit life takes care of payments

When Ralph Fiebig’s wife Mary retired, the couple decided that taking a bigger pension payment instead of more benefits seemed the right thing to do. After all, any bit of extra income helps.

But when Mary passed away last year, so did her pension income. That left Ralph with a mortgage, car payment, and Visa payment. Luckily, The Fiebigs decided to opt for credit life on both their auto loan and Visa card with American 1 Federal Credit Union.

“Everything was taken care of,” Ralph says. “I didn’t have to worry about my car payment or my Visa payment anymore.”

Because Ralph and his wife put credit life insurance on both loans, a total of $11,000 was paid off in full after Mary died. Now, with Ralph facing more medical costs and less income, paying off his auto loan and Visa balance leaves him with two less things to worry about.

He says credit life isn’t that expensive, and pays for itself when the unexpected happens.

“And I was surprised and how smooth it all went,” Ralph says. “It wasn’t a bunch of haggling and phone calls. I just went to the branch and they took care of everything for me.”

Ralph now has his own American 1 Visa, and he chose credit life on that card, too, so his children won’t be burdened when he dies.

Video: Jackson County Rose Parade 2010

Miss the Rose Parade this year? Fear not: we have a short video recap for you over at our YouTube channel.

The All-American Lumberjack Show was a new addition this year, and everyone who came to the Party in the Park after the parade loved it. We got some action shots from the contest at the end of the video.

Check out last year’s Rose Parade over at our YouTube channel, too.
