Fall Women’s Expo winners

Fall Women's Expo - Gold Crown winners

Congratulations to (from left to right) Karen Lond, Della Turk, and Cindy Briskie – our 2010 Fall Women’s Expo jewelry winners, thanks to Gold Crown Jewelers.

Fall Women's Expo - Karen Lond

Karen Lond, our first place winner, won a 1/2 karat diamond necklace. Karen takes a day for her and her friends at the expo, making it a girl’s day out, she says.

Fall Women's Expo - Della Turk

Della Turk won the second prize: a 10 karat gold bracelet with diamond accents. Getting to the expo early is Della’s strategy, especially to get a good parking spot.

Fall Women's Expo - Cindy Briskie

Cindy Briskie won our third-place sterline silver cubic zirconia ring. Cindy takes her out-of-town sisters to the expo to enjoy the day.

“We jump on the shuttle bus,” she says. “It’s much easier.”

Congratulations to all three winners, and thanks to Gold Crown Jewelers for providing our Women’s Expo prizes. Look for your chance to win at our Spring Women’s Expo, coming March 12, 2011.

Women’s Expo ideas needed

We’re brainstorming here at American 1 (you can probably smell the smoke where you’re at) on what type of presentation we could offer at the Women’s Expo this fall in the auditorium at Parkside that women would want to see. Something educational, but fun. Something relevant to our community/residents that would be beneficial. A hot topic that’s not too controversial.

And we’re not talking about businesses pitching their product or ideas and trying to earn more customers. We want to learn something, or grow in some way.

How we can add to our Women’s Expo events and attract more guests as well? If you have an idea of something that you or maybe a female friend or family member would be interested in learning about, let us know in the comments below.

Jackson Project Connect helps the homeless

If you’re homeless, living in a car, or out on the street (or know someone who is), Jackson’s Project Connect is a one-day event that can help with resources.

Project Connect’s next event takes place Friday, July 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Parkside field house (2400 Fourth St.). The group is providing free lunches, haircuts, clothing, and more. Jackson Transportation Authority (JTA) is providing free rides to and from the event.

For more information about this event and project, call Kitrina or Megan at (517) 789-8735.

Spring Women's Expo - Sit-down exercises

Our 2010 Spring Women’s Expo was huge. About 2,000 women huge.

Fall Women’s Expo jewelry winners

Fall Women's Expo - at Gold Crown Jewelers

Congratulations to the three lucky women who won Gold Crown Jewelers’ jewelry giveaway at our Fall Women’s Expo.

Fall Women's Expo - Amanda Nastally, 1st prize

Amanda Nastally, above, was our first prize winner. She opted for Gold Crown Jewelers’ heart pendant necklace.

The 2009 fall expo was Amanda’s first. She was surprised at the variety of vendors and seeing all that was there.

“I liked it,” she said. “I’ll definitely come back.”

Fall Women's Expo - Andrea Wint, 2nd prize

Andrea Wint was our second prize winner. Andrea picked the sterling silver ring with marcasite and amethyst.

She’s been to two women’s expos – March’s spring expo was her first.

“Now I’m hooked,” Andrea said. “It’s awesome.”

Fall Women's Expo - Justina Kukulka, 3rd prize

Justina Kukulka was our third prize winner. Justine earned the 14K gold two-tone earings.

Like Amanda, this fall’s event was Justina’s first women’s expo, and she enjoyed the hands-on activities.

Congratulations to all the women. For more photos from this fall’s event, head to our Flickr photo gallery. Look for more opportunities to win prizes at our Spring Women’s Expo, coming Saturday, March 13, 2010.

Movie in the Park moved indoors

Bad news yet again: we’re moving our Movie in the Park indoors because of the threat of rain Friday night.

This is the way it’s gone all summer. We schedule outdoor events for the Riverwalk Amphitheater, and then get rained out when the day of the event comes. We like to be more safe than sorry, though, because we don’t want guests getting soaked.

So we’ll show “Hotel for Dogs” Friday, Aug. 21 at the Middle School at Parkside auditorium starting at 8 p.m. Look for affordable refreshments and a free dog collar bracelet for the first 100 kids who attend.

See you then!

Teen Idol - Singing her heart out

Sure, it didn’t rain, but the Middle School at Parkside autorium provided a great venue for this year’s Teen Idol singing competition.

Check out pictures from the event on our Flickr page.

Congratulations to Bridgette Powell (above) of Jackson, this year’s Teen Idol champion. Bridgette returned from a third-place finish at the 2008 Teen Idol event.

Olivia Hale was our runner-up, and Taylor Hawkins took third place.

Teen Idol locations changes due to rain

Head’s up: we’re changing the location of our Teen Idol event due to threat of rain.

Join us Friday, July 10 at 6 p.m. at the Middle School at Parkside auditorium, located at 2400 Fourth St. in Jackson. Same date, same place, just a different location.

The weather forecast isn’t looking good for Friday. Threats of rain and thunderstorms are moving our singing competition indoors.

See you Friday night!

Pictures from Kids’ Fest 2009

Hillsdale Kids' Fest

We had a great time at both June Kids’ Fest events in Jackson and Hillsdale.

Head to our Flickr site to browse through pictures from both days. We were lucky to be inside during the Jackson Kids’ Fest at Parkside – Hillsdale’s event was hot, hot, hot!

Our next Kids’ Fest is taking place at Chelsea’s Timbertown Park on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
