Free shredding day scheduled

Good news: we scheduled a free community shredding day for Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our Home Office. Bring as many shred-able items as you can bring, Shred-It says.

We’ve received tons of requests for another community shredding day since our last one back in November 2008. The shredding company we tried that time, Northwest Refuse, had their shredding machine break down and they had no plans to replace it. That left us searching for another company – so we stuck with the original.

American 1 tries hard to protect our members from identity theft. A big part of that is education, and we consider our shredding days another part. You can’t get things stolen if they’re mixed in with a billion other tiny scraps of paper.

UPDATE: We’re giving away a shredder! Stop inside the Home Office for treats and identity theft information, and enter to win a cross-cut paper shredder.

Shred day cancelled

Unfortunately, we have to cancel the free document shredding day we scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 13.

Northwest Refuse, the compay who provided the mobile shredder at our events, told us earlier this month that the shredded broke down, and they didn’t know when (or if) they could get a replacement.

But we will work on another shredding date, so look for updates right here on our blog.

One ton of paper shredded at Shredfest

Number of the day:

1,920

That’s the amount of paper, in pounds, that Northwest Refuse shredded at our Shredfest last weekend. Almost one ton of paper securely obliterated.

It was a freezing cold and rainy day that Saturday, but about 50 people stopped by to shred their confidential documents in our Home Office parking lot. Bill and the guys from Northwest deserve a pat on the back for standing out there all day to help people out.

We posted some pictures from the event, and I took some video (above) of how the process works.

Plus we held a drawing for a personal shredder. Congratulations to Kelly D. (above), one of our Jackson members, for winning! Kelly brought

Stay tuned for news on whether we’ll hold another Shredfest. In the meantime, Northwest Refuse does this kind of thing during regular businesses hours, so be sure to pay them a visit.

Member wins shredder, $50 Visa credit

Deborah H. - shredder winner

Deborah H. gets a lot of credit card solicitations in the mail.

She bought a household shredder to take care of most of it, but when American 1 offered to shred her junk mail for free, she jumped at the chance. Since then, she’s shredded dozens of credit card offers, and won our Top Secret Visa contest – including a heavy-duty home shredder and a $50 credit to her American 1 Visa card.

“American 1 is the only place I do business,” Deborah (above, with her son Cory) says, and her American 1 Visa is the only credit card she has.

Now she’ll use her new shredder to shred everyone else’s credit card offers, including the four she’s received already after winning our contest.

Congrats to Deborah! To learn more about big bank credit card tricks, visit our Top Secret Visa site.

Next shred day set.

Our next free paper shredding day?

Mark your calendar: it’s going to be Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

So start collecting your credit card offers, tax forms, personal documents, etc. You bring ’em, we’ll shred ’em!

Northwest Refuse will bring their giant shredding machine to take care of it all, too.

Stay tuned for updates and more information!

Would you take advantage of another Shred Day?

The last time we had a free shred day, we had a few folks show up to shred and recycle their personal and confidential documents. American 1 believes in shredding personal documents because it helps fight identity theft (thieves can’t steal your identity when it’s in a million pieces, right?), and the company we use even recycles the paper.

Our January shredfest was a hit, but it wasn’t a big hit.

Lately, however, we’ve had quite a few members and non-members call and ask when we’re having another shredding day.

So what do you think – would you come and shred your personal documents? Which day would work best for you? Have you been waiting for American 1 to do another free community shredfest?

Shred your junk mail, win a $50 credit on your Visa

Goodbye junk mail

So we have this big “Operation: Your best interest” project running right now, where we’ve done all this research on big bank credit cards.

Part of the whole operation is our offer to shred your credit card solicitations (otherwise known as “junk mail”). When we do, we’ll enter you to win a $50 credit on your American 1 Visa for every solicitation you bring in. It’s limited to credit card mailings, though, so please don’t bring in your 1976 tax forms.

We’re doing this for a few reasons.

  • It fights identity theft. The less paperwork with your name and address sitting in your trash can, the less likely a thief can steal it and grab a credit card in your name. By all means, get a shredder for your own household.
  • Our shredders rock. I’m not bragging, but we have those industrial-strength cross-cut shredders that mince paperwork into hamster bedding. These things are cool.
  • Junk mail is wasteful. Think about all the postage and paper and fuel wasted just to send you a bunch of credit offers. How many of those can you actually use? Think about all that waste.
  • We want your story. We’d love to film you shredding a big stack of Visa or Discover Card offers and post it on our Top Secret Visa web site. Bonus points if you do a little dance while it’s shredding.

Our Shred Day back in January was such a hit we thought it would be cool to do this just for credit card solicitations. It helps protect your identity, and it’s a lot of fun to do. And hey – it could win you $50 on your Visa.
